Who says that winning a Razzie is a bad thing? After being named Worst Director for “Megalopolis
,” legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola
fully embraced the dishonor and used the opportunity to criticize Hollywood for producing formulaic movies.
“So few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking,” he shared on Instagram on Friday.
“Megalopolis ” was nominated for six Razzies altogether, including Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture. Alongside Coppola, Jon Voight took home the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor.
“In this wreck of a world today, where Art is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to Not follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now,” Coppola wrote. “What an honor to stand...

The Oscars are ready to toast the celebration with a martini — shaken, not stirred.
Variety has learned exclusively that the ceremony will perform a special tribute of the iconic songs of the James Bond franchise at Sunday’s Academy Awards in honor of longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson , who received Honorary Oscars at the past Governors Awards. The Academy declined to comment.
While details remain scarce, it is unclear whether the tribute will focus solely on Oscar-winning and nominated songs or take a broader approach to celebrating all 26 Bond themes. However, according to sources, the tribute will include what is being described as an assembly of surprising and immense talents.
If the Academy opts for a comprehensive retrospective, it could offer long-overdue recognition to classics such as Shirley Bassey ’s “Diamonds Are Forever ,” which, despite being considered one of the franchise’s finest musical moments, was overlooked...

Director Fleur Fortuné ’s movie hits theaters March 21 from Magnolia Pictures after premiering at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rounding out the cast are Himesh Patel , Minnie Driver , Indira Varma , Charlotte Ritchie , Nicholas Pinnock , Leah Harvey and Anaya Thorley .
Set in the near future where parenthood is heavily controlled, The Assessment centers on a couple played by Olsen and Patel , whose relationship is examined over a seven-day period by an assessor (Vikander) ahead of their pregnancy plan.
“Over the next seven days, you’ll undergo close observation and formal testing to ascertain suitability for parenting,” Vikander tells the couple in the trailer. “I want to get to know the real you.”
Later, a frustrated Olsen exclaims to Patel, “I want a real child — not this.

As Jesse Eisenberg
’s “A Real Pain
” heads into Oscars weekend with two nominations following a fruitful awards season as a critical darling, it’s hard to believe the film was once turned down by every single distribution company approached (bet they’re kicking themselves now).
In the wake of those “discouraging” rejections, Eisenberg, who also stars in the film alongside Kieran Culkin , approached indie production company Topic Studios , whose previous films include “Spencer ,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and “Theater Camp .”
“When we met Topic , it was such a great relief, because they loved the movie. They understood that the tone was unusual, and they appreciated the movie for what it is, as opposed to questioning it or wanting it to be something different,” Eisenberg tells Variety. “We were very lucky.”

Sometimes, when it comes to adapting Stephen King
's novels for film or television, unmade is better.
There have been plenty of triumphs and many wipeouts, but the ones that sting the most tend to be the adaptations that bring a paucity of vision to his most expansive works. There have been two miniseries made out of King's post-apocalyptic masterpiece "The Stand ," but they fell well short due to either budget constraints and/or simple timidity. If you're going to take on a book that's so celebrated and massive, why start from a place where you know you'll be cutting corners? It's encouraging to know that a major filmmaker like James Wan , who can secure a substantial budget due to his blockbuster success with franchises like "The Conjuring " and "The Fast and the Furious ," wants to take a crack at "The Stand ," but the material is so tainted at this...

Maika Monroe
raised her profile significantly with what was arguably 2024's most terrifying horror movie "Longlegs
." The film from director Osgood Perkins
, who's just now delivered the Stephen King
adaptation "The Monkey
," was a modest sensation when it arrived last summer, propelled in part by a marketing campaign that did everything right to make "Longlegs
" a hit. Though the film didn't quite live up to the frankly unreasonable amount of hype this marketing campaign built, it was a big enough hit that it not only made distributor Neon
feel like an emerging A24
rival worthy of the label, it introduced wider audiences to both Perkins
and Monroe
, both of whom had been toiling away for years before "Longlegs

In Monroe's case, the Australian actress gained some notoriety for her role in 2014's "It Follows ," one of the best horror movies of the 2000s — even if it...

The story goes that the casting of "Groundhog Day
" gave its writer, Danny Rubin
, a cause for concern when Bill Murray
got picked for the lead role of Phil Connors, the grumpy weatherman who eventually sees the brighter side of life after living the same day over and over again. Admittedly, while we can't imagine anyone else in the role now, maybe he wouldn't have been so worried had Batman got the gig instead.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Michael Keaton revealed that he was approached for the lead role of the beloved comedy before Murray got the call. Unfortunately, he didn't accept the offer because Phil Connors felt like a character he didn't want to play again.
"I didn't get it — I thought, This guy sounds like the kind of wry, sardonic, glib young man I've played — and it ended up being so great," the actor explained.
He was right.

Gene Hackman
was an American original: an everyman actor with unremarkable physical features who became exceptional through the sheer force of his authenticity. Actors can drive themselves nuts trying to be believable, to simply inhabit a scene as a human being with sincere purpose, but Hackman was only ever genuine. He was also prolific, which means that his gift was occasionally squandered in some less-than-stellar films, but we watched them anyway because the promise of a new Hackman performance was worth the time. Now that he's left us for good at the age of 95, those hours we spent watching dreck like "Loose Cannons
" or "The Replacements
" hardly feel like a waste.
Hackman appeared in all kinds of movies, and excelled at so many different types of roles that he was never closely associated with one particular genre. But there was something about Westerns that perfectly suited his unfussy performance style.

This Sunday could see West Bank
-set documentary No Other Land
win an Oscar but it remains without US distribution, one of many challenging films facing problems
The Oscars are far from a consensus, but few films head into Sunday’s awards with as much critical acclaim as No Other Land , a documentary chronicling the destruction of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta by the Israeli military, which seeks to expel families from their land to make way for a military training base. The film, made by an Israeli-Palestinian collective, garnered numerous festival accolades, several independent awards and nearly every American critics association’s “best of” title. But the vast majority of Americans cannot view it.
For months, even after No Other Land secured an Oscar nomination, no major US distributor bought the project, stranding the film in a strange limbo – high visibility, at least in the film world,...

Half a century on from the sublimely ridiculous Tommy, the passionate abandon that distinguished Russell’s films – from composer biopics to the infamous The Devils, among other bonkers oddities – is needed now more than ever
This month marks the 50th anniversary of the release of one of the most important and groundbreaking pop movies of all time: Ken Russell ’s psychedelic screen adaptation of the Who’s rock opera Tommy (1975). Marketed with the eye-catching tag lines “Your senses will never be the same” and “He will tear your soul apart”, the film starred Roger Daltrey as the traumatised kid who becomes a Pinball Wizard and (more importantly) a cult messiah.
Blending themes to which Russell would return throughout his career (the transformative power of music; the alchemical madness of genius; the dark power of false religion), Tommy was a typically wild ride that swung between the sublime and the ridiculous.

The Oz-set blockbuster, plus the Inside Out

sequels, packed out cinemas but won’t win best picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards
Box-office success is a strong indicator of Oscars failure at this year’s Academy Awards, with the two highest-grossing best picture nominees among those titles least likely to win.

The Golden Globes organization is ending its policy of paying a $75,000 annual salary to former Hollywood Foreign Press Association members, who vote on the organization’s annual film and TV honors.
The move comes as the former HFPA members were one year into a five-year deal, reached in June 2023 between the group and its new owners Penske Media Eldridge. Within the agreement, a $75,000 base annual salary was designated for voters that had been grandfathered into the newly shaped organization after being members of the HFPA, previously the title for the Globes’ voting body before this new acquisition.
Globes president Helen Hoehne informed organization members of the change during a video conference call held Friday. The pivot to stop paying those voters matches the pro bono protocol traditional to other major awards events, like the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys, which do not provide compensation for their membership.

As Indian cinema continues to gain recognition worldwide, it’s still hard to explain the hold it has on those of us who grew up with it.
The intrepid cinephile can always do their research; watch the latest buzzy international feature, check out popular films that are streaming, even judge a book by its cover (a movie by its hit songs). But there’s something at the core of Hindi films especially that is deeply entrenched in culture. Usually I explain it by describing the theater where I watched every new Hindi film from 2005-2009: a suburban Michigan multiplex whose concession counter was flanked by two sacred symbols — a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh , and a framed photo of actor Shah Rukh Khan .
You need to understand that, at least conceptually, to appreciate something like “Superboys of Malegaon ,” the true story of film fanatics in the eponymous village...

Overall, the past storyline (as usual) seemed like the higher stakes one — until the episode's closing moments, when Misty (Christina Ricci ) sees the latest post on her Citizen Detective message board. Lottie (Simone Kessell ) is dead, lying at the bottom of a stairwell. Just to convince any doubters, the camera lingers on her still body to show, yes, she really is dead.
This twist has got the "Yellowjackets " hive all riled up, and not exactly because they're singing its praises.

Rob Lowe
welcomed “Sex and the City
” favorite Kristin Davis
onto his “Literally!” podcast and the two discussed the lack of sexy movies in today’s Hollywood. Lowe
remembered the studio dumping his 1988 movie “Masquerade
” because “it was too sexy,” and the duo marveled over how that wouldn’t likely happen in the industry these days.
“Nobody has sex scenes in movies anymore,” Lowe proclaimed before taking back the comment because A24 ’s “Babygirl ” recently opened and was “great.”
Directed by Halina Reijn , “Babygirl ” stars Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO whose personal and professional life is upended when she begins a steamy affair with an office intern (Harris Dickinson ). Kidman won best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance. The movie features several sex scenes as Kidman’s character explores her submissive kink. Lowe loved the movie but thought the response was interesting.

Once Geoffrey Rush
hit his mid-60s, he was offered more and more roles where his age was the focal point. Yet when he read the script for “The Rule of Jenny Pen
,” the nursing home-set horror film offered a different angle.
Rush plays Stefan Mortensen, a tough-talking judge who suffers a stroke and must live in an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, one of the other wards is Dave Crealy (John Lithgow ), who terrorizes the residents in increasingly sinister ways — along with the help of his hand puppet, Jenny Pen. As Dave gets more emboldened to do terrible things in the nursing home, Stefan loses more and more of his faculties, having to take down his nemesis as his motor skills fade.
“I’ve had quite a few scripts sent my way in the last eight years that felt like treading water,” the 73-year-old actor says. “But in this, his brain deteriorates — actually,...

British actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh
has been a Hollywood staple for years, between his adaptations of Shakespeare plays like 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing
" and 1996's "Hamlet
" and blockbuster projects like "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
," as well as the first "Thor
" movie in 2021. He also won his first Academy Award in 2021 thanks to the autobiographical film "Belfast
," which was based on his own childhood in the Northern Irish city during the Troubles. Branagh is clearly a curiously-minded and ambitious filmmaker and performer who's always looking for a new challenge, which might explain why, in 2017, he started adapting Agatha Christie
's Hercule Poirot stories for the big screen.
Branagh kicked off this new project with "Murder on the Orient Express " that year and followed It up with two other Poirot stories, "Death on the Nile " and "A Haunting in Venice ," which came out in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Gagné explained that a custom cable was built for the one-shot movement.

Gene Hackman
and his wife Betsy Arakawa
tested negative for carbon monoxide in the initial results of the toxicology report, leading officials to rule out the gas as a cause of Hackman and Arakawa’s death, Sheriff Adan Mendoza
said in a press conference on Friday.
Mendoza said that while the investigation into the cause of Hackman’s death is active and ongoing, officials found that the last day Hackman’s pacemaker registered was on February 17, 10 days before he was discovered deceased. The Sheriff added that it was a “very good assumption” that February 17 was likely the last day of Hackman’s life.
No cause of death has been determined just yet, and Mendoza reiterated that there was no sign of foul play at this time. Autopsy and toxicology results are still pending. Mendoza also said there was no sign of trauma on the bodies to suggest they would’ve fallen or injured themselves.

believe Hackman may have been dead for nine days by the time the couple were found in their New Mexico home on Wednesday.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told a press conference earlier on Friday that the “last event” of Hackman’s pacemaker was on February 17. “According to the pathologist that is a very good assumption that that was his last day of life,” said Mendoza .
The officer added that an autopsy found no external trauma to either person and no evidence of death by carbon monoxide.

The deaths of Gene Hackman

shared at a press conference Friday afternoon. In a statement, Mendoza
stated that both Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning.
The sheriff also disclosed that Hackman’s pacemaker recorded its “last event” on Feb. 17, meaning that it is currently assumed that that is the date that the actor died. Mendoza said there remains uncertainty over the order of the couple’s deaths.
Final toxicology and autopsy reports remain pending — a process that Mendoza says “could be a month or three months or longer.” Initial findings indicate that there was “no external trauma to either individual.”
In their investigation, authorities collected two green cellphones, two bottles of medication, one bottle of over-the-counter Tylenol , a request for medical records and a 2025 monthly planner for evidentiary purposes. The sheriff...

It's hard not to love a good fan theory, because sometimes they're absolutely bonkers while actually having some pretty salient points. Fan theories have been around since long before the internet, of course, with theories about the potential eighth passenger on The Minnow on "Gilligan's Island
" dating back to at least the 1960s, but the world wide web has made it much easier for fans to develop and share their theories. Anyone with a wild take can head to social media and proliferate it, which means we are in an era of some truly fascinating fan theories. One of the most unique connects Stephen King
's terrifying monstrous clown Pennywise
from "It" to a beloved character from a Disney classic, and while it sounds ludicrous at first, it's really not all that far-fetched. At the very least, it's not any more far-fetched than the idea that Jesus Christ was an Engineer in the "Alien

It is a testament to the depth and breadth of the career of Gene Hackman

in "Superman: The Movie." Fans of modern action movies are no doubt fondly remembering his work in the tense and sweaty thriller "Crimson Tide

You can find so many examples of brilliance in Gene Hackman's list of credits, across so many genres. One of the most common threads throughout his career was his deft ability to create effectively memorable confrontations with his fellow performers, taking what's written on...

We also look at two deaths that took place in the span of 24 hours this week, Michelle Trachtenberg and Gene Hackman . Meanwhile, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2024, and it’s telling how small audience interest was in a number of the streamer’s 2025 Oscar contenders.
At the Spirits, “Anora ” was the big winner with three top awards, and director Sean Baker gave a powerful speech about how indies need to sustain careers going forward.
At the SAG Awards, the big surprise was Timothée Chalamet finally notching a win for his performance as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown .” Will that repeat at the Oscars? No, and we explain why.

Get off the boat and turn around if you haven't watched the first two episodes of season 3 of "The White Lotus
" — light spoilers lie ahead!
When season 3 of "The White Lotus " premiered on February 16, fans probably noticed that the theme song was ... really different. The same composer, Cristobal Tapia de Veer , has worked on all three seasons of Mike White 's juicy HBO anthology series, but he's changed up the theme for each installment. Season 1, set in Hawai'i, featured a theme called (appropriately) "Aloha !" Season 2, which was set on the Italian isle of Sicily, got its own tune, "Renaissance " — which was pretty universally adored by fans — and now, we've got "Enlightenment," the season 3 theme that fits the installment's new setting, Thailand. So what was his inspiration for "Enlightenment?" Tiktok and cat sounds.
According to an article in Variety, Tapia de Veer was influenced by some unlikely sources for the show's third season.

After years of starts and stops and development, we may finally get a return to the world of “Crazy Rich Asians
.”
A new series is in development from Warner Bros. Television for Max that will be based on Kevin Kwan ’s book series and will bring back the 2018 film’s writer Adele Lim to serve as the series showrunner, as well as director Jon M. Chu to executive produce.
The series will be a one-hour drama and is only in development at this stage, so it’s unclear whether cast from the original film, which starred Constance Wu , Henry Golding , Michelle Yeoh , and Gemma Chan , will return.
Lim , who was a co-writer on “Crazy Rich Asians ,” is now an EP, writer, and showrunner via her production company 100 Tigers , while Chu is an EP via Electric Somewhere. Kwan, the author of the three books in the “Asians” series, will also executive produce.

Flanked by two men who appeared to be security, Gascón bypassed the Cesar press line and went directly inside the Olympia auditorium. She was placed on the same row as her co-star Saldana and Audiard but was not seated next to them.

Here’s a hot take: The year doesn’t really start until March.
For many of us, January and February remain in the cloud of winter — short days, cold weather, seasonal affective disorder (the trifecta!). The IndieWire staff spends those months firmly entrenched in awards season, from Golden Globes to guild awards and the Oscars, happening this Sunday, March 2.
The rest of the month is full of infinite possibilities. What does life look like after months of “Emilia Peréz ” discourse? Or with an extra hour of sunlight in the evening? Which shows will emerge from the darkness of winter to shape our spring viewing — and maybe kick off another awards cycle as Emmys season looms ahead?
This March starts with the return of an old favorite in “Daredevil: Born Again ,” and culminates in Seth Rogen ’s Hollywood-centric satire, “The Studio .” In between, there’s something for everyone: the family-crime-comedy “Deli Boys ,...

This article contains major spoilers for "Severance
" season 2 episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo"
"Severance " season 2 episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo," goes hard. It reveals that Gemma (Dichen Lachman ) has multiple innies — at least as many as the rooms she visits, which are named after the files the Macrodata Refinement team is dealing with. What's more, it appears that the Gemma trapped within the Lumon complex is the original personality, and her various "room" innies aren't the only severed personas she has. She also has a failsafe innie that's activated in the elevator during an escape attempt, whom Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman ) immediately orders to return.
The episode's revelation that a person's mind can be severed into more than two parts is monumental, and once again blows the show's brain game wide open. Who's to say that any character we've seen is limited to just one severance? What's more, there's no way of knowing for...
